Method for Electrical transient immunity testing on electrical units within Océ systems
Job ID #: 93 P
osition Type: Student (Stagiair of Afstudeerder)
Location: Limburg (NL)
Education Required: Hoger Beroeps Onderwijs (HBO/BSc.)
Functional Area: Research & Development
Functieomschrijving:
Electrical circuits are subject to transients from a variety of sources. Overvoltages can be
induced directly on circuit lines by connected devices. For example inductive loads such as
motors which can become a transient source during switching. Other sources include corona discharging, flash ignitions and electro-mechanical switches etc.
Stringent EMC requirements apply to both Océ systems and the electrical units (printed-circuitboards, sensors, power-supplies etc.) used therein. One of requirements is the susceptibility to Electrical Fast Transients (EFT). The EFT immunity standard IEC61000-4-4 is applied for both system and unit-level testing due to the lack of harmonized standards on unit-level.
The scope of the IEC61000-4-4 standard is equipment level, test-levels and test-setup is less intended for unit-level testing. For unit-level tests we prefer a more practical test focused on the electromagnetic environment within our systems and without the need of a separate test-setup for each unit.
Assignment description
Develop a method to test intra-system transient immunity of electrical units used within our systems. The method must be practical to use. Fast, easy and reproducible results are the keywords. Exploratory research with an Inductive Coupling Clamp (ICC) has already shown promising results.
Part of the assignment is to measure the EFT environment in various systems. The results will be used to define the characteristics of the pulse generator and to specify the test-levels. A comparison with the currently used method is needed.
