Key in the printing process is registration: the alignment of medium (often paper) to the imaging device (e.g. print head for inkjet printing). The medium is positioned by a roller which is driven via a worm wheel gearing by a DC motor. To position the medium at high accuracy, feed-back/feed-forward control is being used. These control loops are closed over a motor encoder, a roller encoder, a sensor that measures the medium position directly, or a combination of these.

Assignment
To measure the medium position directly, newly developed optical sensors are being evaluated. The robustness of these sensors to many system properties (e.g. vibration, temperature variation, buckling media), is very important for adequate functioning and high reliability. The assignment is to research a specific sensor for all these system properties: extract the most critical properties, determine the sensitivity of the sensor accuracy to these properties, model expectations, and validate by experiments.

Location and duration
The internship will take place at Océ Technologies, R&D in Venlo.
Duration is targeted at 3-6 months.
